Why Stockholm?
The area is unique in that its rural character is diverse with not only farms and forests, but numerous rivers and lakes including the St. Lawrence River, Lake Champlain and Lake Ontario as well as the proximity of the Adirondack Mountains. This wide range of landscape provides unlimited opportunity for just about any outdoor activity: hiking, biking, water skiing, all kinds of boating, (canoe, kayak, speed boats, pontoon boats) downhill and cross-country skiing, ice skating, camping, bird watching, hunting and fishing and even golf. While not all of these activities are available in our small town, they are all plentiful within a 1- 1.5 hours drive.
All this is augmented with the presence of 4 universities within 10-20 miles. This close proximity brings art, music, academic pursuits and interesting, diverse people close to home while keeping the community vibrant and contemporary, which is certainly distinctive for such a rural area.

Couple that with the fact that you also have easy access to shopping for just about anything from locally owned businesses to big box stores. You need not worry about food shortages as road side stands dot the landscape during the growing season, local farmers supply schools, the local Co-op, and restaurants, not to mention you can grow your own! Summer time brings weekly farmers’ markets, and annual town festivals featuring local artisans, craftsmen and musicians. There are numerous locally owned and chain restaurants but you are not far from larger cities like Ottawa and Montreal if you do hanker for some city life and a night on the town. Or you can go hang out in Lake Placid, check out Ausable Chasm and ride the ski lift up to White face during the off season. Another great outing is Alexandria Bay where you can tour a castle and the thousand islands. Finally, you are also connected to the World Wide Web with cable, DSL and/or high speed fiber.
There aren’t many places you can feed the chickens at 5 am, have dinner at 6 and be at a symphony concert at 7:30. Or have a day skiing, go to an art opening and spend the night in your own bed. And you can do all this without being caught in traffic or wasting time looking for a parking place.
Ultimately, though, the real strength of the Town is its people. One neighbor may be a dairy farmer, another, a professor, another may run a small business and another may work at Arconic , the County’s largest private employer. You may see them every day or only occasionally, but when you need some help, you can count on them to be there.
